Travel to Paris and visit de Louvre Museum
One of DINKtravelers’ essential characteristics is their taste for culture. That’s why museums are always included in their journeys’ itineraries. Today we share with you a couple of tips to visit one of the world’s most famous museums. Shall we?
The word museum comes from the Greek museion, which refers to an agora consecrated as a place of worship of the muses through the arts. This included literature, music and sculpture. Even though nowadays there are many museums dedicated to painting, originally the museion did not exhibit any canvasses because that’s what art galleries were for.
The Best Museums in the World
In the Travellers Choice Awards 2014 by TripAdvisor, the Louvre, in Paris, was listed as one of the best-rated museums, and what’s most relevant is that it has appeared in that list for 10 consecutive years!
Architecture of the Louvre
However, the Louvre was not always a museum. If we pay close attention to its monumental architecture, we’ll notice that it reminds us of a palace. This huge fortress was built in the twelfth century and then it became the home of monarchs such as Charles V and Catherine of Medici, who were the first to introduce works of art into the building and set the bases for a collection of over 35,000 works that we can find there today.
History of the Louvre
The Louvre was also the first museum that was founded in the western world, and it opened its doors in 1793. Its collection is divided in cultures and art schools, so during your visit you’ll get the chance to appreciate works from the times of the pharaohs, Roman sculpture, pieces from the French Middle Ages, masterpieces from the Renaissance and detailed canvasses of the Flemish tradition. A fun fact: The Louvre is one of the museums with the greatest number of works by Rembrandt, a painter who was famous for his self-portraits, which are nowadays considered the origins of the selfie.
This Parisian building combines art and innovative architecture because in 1989 the American architect Ieoh Ming Pei won the contest to renovate the museum’s image and he integrated the crystal pyramid that now works as an underground access to the building.
Tips for Visiting the Louvre
If this is the first time you visit the Louvre, prepare for the experience by wearing comfortable shoes and don’t plan anything else for that day, because if you want to make the most of your visit, you’ll have to dedicate it at least 4 hours. We recommend paying for an audio guide –there are 12 languages you can choose from– and buying a museum map so you can organize your tour.
Lunch and shopping will not be a problem given that the building has its own mall know as The Carrousel. You can visit it after exiting the museum.
Finally, if you want to enjoy a peculiar aesthetic experience, go to the tactile hall where you can interact directly with several reproductions of sculptures and paintings. This activity will help you discover beauty from a new perspective.
